Dean's Award Established
pen
The College Faculty Status Committee has approved the application for the new Dean's Award for Outstanding Scholarly Achievement—two annual awards of $3,000 each, one for a tenured faculty member and one for an untentured tenure-track faculty member. The awards will be based on a calendar year's research and will join the Arts and Sciences Lecturer Award as the two most prestigious research awards in the College. "I am thrilled to have the guidelines for these awards in place, as it represents just one more step we are taking to recognize people in the College for the truly outstanding work they are doing," said Dean Olson. Since excellence in research can often lead to external funding opportunities, this award is also meant to reward efforts that can ultimately help the College reduce its dependence on state funding.

Applications will be evaluated based on research and creative activity, including publications, grants and contracts, presentation of papers and major speeches, and honors and awards; service on doctoral dissertation committees and master's thesis committees; service to the discipline; and external letters of review. Applicants will be screened by their Department Faculty Status Committees, and those candidates that are sent forward will be evaluated by the College Faculty Status Committee. The Dean will make the final selection from a list of finalists sent forward from the CFSC. “Excellent undergraduate and graduate programs depend on having faculty engaged in making original contributions to the scholarship in their disciplines,” said Associate Dean Sam Catanzaro. “We in the College are doing all we can to recognize and reward both excellent teaching and outstanding research. These awards will send a strong signal that the College supports its outstanding faculty.”
