The College also boasts three University Teaching Initiative Award winners: Dr. Kyle Ciani (Assistant Professor of History), Dr. Jon Friesen (Assistant Professor of Chemistry), and Dr. William Perry (Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences). The University Teaching Initiative Award recognizes faculty members who are relatively new to the teaching profession and who have shown considerable promise in teaching.
Arts and Sciences graduate students also did very well in the University competition. Joseph Staples (Biological Sciences) won the University Level I Doctorate Graduate Student Teaching Award; Angela Marie Pollard (Biological Sciences) won the University Level II Doctorate Graduate Student Teaching Award; and Catherine Houghtaling (Communication) won the University Level I Masters Graduate Student Teaching Award. Level I graduate students have sole responsibility for instruction in a course while Level II graduate students direct labs or discussion groups associated with a course taught by a faculty member, or have significant responsibilities team or co-teaching a course.
The University Outstanding Teacher Awards Program exists to honor and recognize individuals who have achieved excellence as teachers at Illinois State University. By honoring such individuals, the University demonstrates its commitment to teaching as a scholarly endeavor, emphasizes outstanding engagement with student learning, and provides incentives for faculty members to pursue activities that enhance them as teachers. The winners will be formally recognized at the College awards ceremony on February 4, 2005 and again at Founders Day Convocation on February 17, 2005.
