| Dr. Gary A. Olson |
Dear Faculty and Staff,
I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome you back following what I hope was an enjoyable holiday break. The fall semester was exceedingly productive in that the College launched a number of faculty and staff support initiatives, and the spring semester promises to be just as exciting. The College Office was very busy over the break as we moved forward on several new initiatives. As you will see from this issue of CAS News, the College appointed Dr. Janie Leatherman (Professor of Political Science) Director of the newly created Office of International Affairs. The College also finalized the reorganization of its seven independent computing units into one centralized unit—CAS-IT. Also, the College hosted the inaugural meeting of its Community Advisory Board, consisting of 25 leaders in the Bloomington-Normal community, in an effort to identify new and strengthen existing mutually beneficial partnerships. Finally, the College appointed Dr. Epa Rosa (Associate Professor of Physics) as its first Administrative Fellow. Next week’s issue of CASNews will contain a full story on Dr. Rosa’s appointment.

College technology professionals at the CAS-IT Retreat | The College has just undergone a major reorganization of its seven individual technology support units to form a College-wide technology support unit to be known as CAS-IT. “This new organization will help the College become even more responsive to faculty, staff, and student technology needs,” said Dean Olson. “It will also allow us as a College to have significant influence on University-wide technology initiatives.” Under CAS-IT, the budgets of the individual units are centralized into a single budget; technology planning and policy is coordinated across the College and with central University technology units; staff members are cross-trained to ensure greater flexibility; and possible sources of revenue such as usage charges, corporate gifts, and external grants are investigated.

Dr. Janie Leatherman (left) with Dr. Kaisa Stadnik, Director of the English Language Institute | The College has appointed Dr. Janie Leatherman (Professor of Political Science) its new Director of International Affairs. The position was created to provide administrative leadership to and coordination of the many international programs in the College. “One reason for creating this position is to increase the profile of international affairs—both in terms of teaching and research abroad. The appointment of Dr. Leatherman will certainly help us accomplish this,” said Dean Olson. “Another aim is to have our Director of International Affairs supervise and collaborate with the Director of the English Language Institute to enhance the institute’s offer offerings so that it becomes a truly campus-wide resource.”

| Dr. Nick Maroules | Dr. Nick Maroules, Sociology-Anthropology Department Chair, in his new office Schroeder Hall renovation is halfway done, and faculty and staff from the departments of History, Politics and Government, and Sociology-Anthropology moved back into the east wing last week. "The new offices and classrooms look wonderful. Major construction projects like this always bring inconveniences, but I think it really was worth it in the long run,” said Associate Dean Sam Catanzaro. “I want to thank all the faculty and staff for their patience and cooperation, and I wish them all the best as they settle into their new spaces."
