Rosa Named Administrative Fellow
Dr. Epaminondas Rosa
Associate Professor of Physics Epaminondas Rosa has been named the Spring 2005 Administrative Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences. The CAS Administrative Fellows Program (AFP) is a competitive appointment intended to promote the development of tenured faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences who show exceptional promise as academic leaders. “I saw the position as an opportunity for learning,”said Rosa. “We learn in the classroom from our students, from colleagues and our research, but the AFP position offers the opportunity to learn yet another aspect of academia—administration—one that is typically not readily accessible to most faculty.”

Rosa was selected from a competitive pool of candidates because of his strong administrative philosophy which, according to Rosa, includes a focus on “integrity, competence, dedication, and openness.” "Professor Rosa shows the breadth of perspective necessary to be effective in academic administration," said Dean Olson. "He will bring much to the College."

An AFP appointment provides a one-course release for a faculty member, allowing a semester experience as a special assistant to the Dean. This experience provides the opportunity to learn details of academic administration while working with the Dean and College staff on special projects. Rosa will shadow the Dean and Associate Deans at different times over the course of the semester in order to learn about and contribute to the variety of activities they undertake. In addition, he will work on some special projects. For example, he will work with Associate Dean Sam Catanzaro on identifying and enacting ways the College can enhance its infrastructure for research support. Rosa explained, “I’d like to work toward advancing research in the College, coordinating research among the various departments and units, and contributing to the strategic planning for the College’s research pursuit.”

Rosa began work for his position on the first day of classes last week. “So far, I’ve worked closely with Associate Deans Catanzaro and Rosenthal, and I’ve been impressed with the incredible amount of work they do. I look forward to a productive and educational semester.”
