| Dr. Norma Presmeg | On Thursday evening, Dr. Norma Presmeg, Professor of Mathematics, delivered the 73rd Arts and Sciences Lecture, "Bridging the Arts and Sciences in Mathematics Education Research" to a captive audience. During her lecture, Presmeg focused on her research on visualization. Specifically, Presmeg discussed the instrument she created to determine whether one is a visualizer—a person who uses visual mental images to solve mathematical problems—and how she used that construct to shed light on why visualizers often do not do well in mathematics courses and to develop methods by which teachers might help visualizers succeed in the classroom. "Dr. Presmeg's body of work in mathematics education research establishes her as a leading international scholar," said Dean Olson."Her lecture was insightful and impressive, and I feel honored to serve on the same faculty with Dr. Presmeg."

Members of the Mock Trial Red Team, which qualified for the National Championship Tournament | For the third year running, one of ISU’s mock trial teams has qualified to compete in the most prestigious of three national tournaments. The team qualified by placing in the top three in the regional qualifying tournament, which was held in the Will County Court House in Joliet, Illinois. ISU competed against teams from such schools as the University of Illinois, Lewis University, the University of Chicago, DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, and Eastern Kentucky University. The fourth to seventh place teams at the regional tournament go on to compete in two other "silver" national tournaments. A win in one of those tournaments also qualifies a team for the Championship Tournament. ISU’s second team just missed qualifying to compete in those tournaments. “The fact that this is the third year in a row that we have qualified a team to compete in the National Championship Tournament demonstrates the strength of our mock trial program at ISU,” said Emeritus Professor Tom Eimermann. “This is one of the toughest regions in the country and our students rose to the challenge against some very strong competition.”

Dr. Laura Vogel (far left) at Parkside Junior High School | Three ISU faculty and staff in science and technology fields recently served as Career Pen Pals for a Women’s History Month Exhibit Project in an effort to encourage young female students to pursue careers in the sciences and technology. The Career Pen Pals Project and exhibit is sponsored by the ISU Department of Physics, Expanding Your Horizons Through Math, Science and Technology Conference, and the Association for Women in Science-Heart of Illinois Chapter (AWIS-HOI). “Encouraging young people to pursue their interests and aptitudes in the sciences and technology is especially important for young women," said Grace Foote Johns, Assistant to the Chairperson for Physics. "Educational outreach activities such as the EYH Conference and the Women in Science, Math, and Technology Career Pen Pals Project serve to encourage young female students to consider pursuing interesting career options in science and technology fields; provide female role models for students to look up to; and empower educators to foster equitable learning and career mentoring environments in their schools."
