Broad, an English faculty member since 1994, received his Ph.D. from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. His recently published book, What We Really Value: Beyond Rubrics in Teaching and Assessing Writing, is a major contribution to the field. He is also the co-author of “Rhetorical Assessment: The Practice and Theory of Complementarity,” as well as numerous articles, chapters, and presentations on writing assessment. He was part of a Modern Language Association team that led reform efforts for preparation of secondary English teachers.
Broad was also named this year’s Outstanding Teacher (Humanities) in the College, received a citation for outstanding classroom practices from the Conference on College Composition and Communication, and was awarded the Teaching Initiative Award from Illinois State and the Outstanding Teacher Award from Miami University Department of English. Broad is on the editorial boards of Assessing Writing and the Journal of Writing Assessment. "We recognize that behind each exceptional scholar stands at least one extraordinary educator," said Executive Director and Founder of NSCS Steve Loflin. "Our goal is to provide the students a forum in which to thank them."
