Ali Riaz
"Is Bangladesh becoming a Taliban state?" asks Ali Riaz, Assistant Professor of Politics and Government in his new book, God Willing: The Politics of Islamism in Bangladesh. The author argues that the question has become urgent in light of the growing strength of militant groups supposedly aligned with Al Quaida, the landslide victory of the center-right coalition in the general election of October 2001, and the deliberate and planned violence against religious minorities that followed. Riaz explores the explosive issue of Talibanization by analyzing the politics of Islamism in the world's third most populous Muslim country.

At Dean Olson's request, the College Council has empaneled a committee charged with devising a concrete plan for implementing the recommendations in the Underrepresented Groups Task Force final report, entitled "Recruitment, Retention, and Leadership Development of Women and Minority Faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences." As but one immediate response to this report, Dean Olson will institute a program designed to identify women and faculty of color who exhibit promise as future leaders and to assist in developing these abilities. The CAS Faculty Development Program will, on a competitive basis, make available to faculty the opportunity to gain substantial administrative experience by working for a semester as Faculty Assistant to the Dean. Application and nomination forms will be available to interested faculty on October 1.

The College of Arts and Sciences will host U-Club, a social gathering of University faculty and staff, on Friday, September 17th, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Faculty-Staff Commons, Bone Student Center. Food and beverage will be served.
