History Department Hosts Summer Institutes
Institute Participants
Dr. Frederick Drake and History Teachers
Dr. Frederick Drake from the Department of History recently hosted the largest institute for teachers of history ever held in the United States. The institute, "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution," was held July 11-17 on the Illinois State campus. Forty-five teachers and five Constitution scholars, including Dr. Robert Bradley from Illinois State's Politics and Government Department, attended the conference. The focus of the institute was the principles and ideals embedded in the philosophical foundations of the Constitution. The institute is part of a $125,000 grant from the Center for Civic Education.

This summer, Drake also hosted a second institute, "Doing History: The Contested Terrain of Freedom," which was held August 2-6 on the Illinois State campus. The focus of this institute was the integration of primary and secondary sources in the teaching of history. Illinois State History faculty Lucinda Beier, Linda Clemmons, Anthony Crubaugh, Ross Kennedy, and Mark Wyman presented their current research interests to the 58 teachers. Institute participants created research kits composed of primary sources to use in the classroom. The institute made use of local, national, and international history resources. The "Doing History" Institute, conducted by Dr. Frederick Drake, is part of a $957,000 U.S. Department of Education grant. Combined, these two institutes brought over 100 history teachers to the Illinois State campus.
