The Department of Communication’s TV-10 News recently brought home honors in three student categories at the Illinois News Broadcasters’ Association (INBA) Awards Banquet. The station won first-place for Outstanding Hard TV Program and Outstanding Soft TV Program, and honorable mention for Outstanding Videography. In addition, TV-10 chief photographer Stephen Bourque Jr., a senior Mass Communication major from Shorewood, was awarded one of four $700 scholarships given annually by the INBA. “The work these students do is truly inspiring,” said Dean Olson. “I congratulate these students and their professors for their hard work and for the recognition they bring the College.”

The station was awarded first-place for Outstanding Hard TV Program for “TV-10 on Location,” a 30-minute magazine-style news show produced last summer featuring stories on types of summer education opportunities available to kids in Bloomington/Normal. It included a behind-the-scenes tour of the then under-construction Children’s Discovery Museum in downtown Normal. The executive producer anchor was Meghan Fisher of Peoria; co-anchor Eric Marshall of Springfield; primary photographer Kris Racine of Bolingbrook; editor Jeff Blackburn of Braidwood; reporters Hilary Brown of Lincoln and Ursula Obniski of Arlington Heights; and photographers Ben Anderson of Woodstock, Britt Johnson of New Lenox, JiUn Kim of Korea, Aaron Lee of Joliet, Ray Lee and Chris Mann of Normal, Jill Montesano of West Chicago, Jen Ross of Normal, and Alicia Wold of Lombard.

Another first-place rating was for Outstanding Soft TV Program for “Tech Bin,” a 30-minute program showcasing new information about technology and related products in an offbeat informal format. The anchors/reporters for “Tech Bin” were Priya Soni of Danville and Jerad Weiner of Arlington Heights.

TV-10 Photographer Christine Van Fleet of McHenry, a junior Mass Communication major, received an honorable mention in the category of Outstanding Videography. Van Fleet submitted a photo-essay on a local stained-glass artist as well as sports stories on the Illinois State-Bradley basketball game and a high school football contest.

TV-10 has been a tradition on the ISU campus since 1974. It is a student-centered program that allows students to produce every aspect of a live daily newscast, which can be viewed by a potential audience of 80,000 on local cable. TV-10 is the only television newscast produced entirely in the Bloomington-Normal market. TV-10's leadership team consists of Laura Trendle Polus, News Director; Rick Ricioppo, Production Director; and Rick Kempf and Rob Whalen, Broadcast Engineers.
