Geography-Geology Students Earn Prestigious Honors
Julia Ferguson
Julia Ferguson, a senior Geology major and Theatre Design minor, and Rachael Masa, a senior Geography major and Environmental Studies minor, have been recognized as top students in their respective fields. Feguson has been selected to receive the Morris K. Udall Scholarship, and Masa has been selected as one of forty students worldwide to be part of the International Scholar Laureate Program Delegation on the Environment. “The Department is extremely happy for both Julia and Rachael,” said Dave Malone, Department Chair of Geography-Geology. “The Udall Scholarship is yet another significant honor for Julia, and Rachael's work in Brazil will be a unique and rewarding experience.”

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation awards 80 merit-based scholarships of up to $5,000 and 50 Honorable Mentions of $350 to students who have demonstrated outstanding potential and a commitment to pursuing careers related to the environment. Ferguson was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to help fund her education at ISU. Ferguson is currently very active on campus. She is involved in the Student Environmental Action Coalition, designs costumes for productions in the School of Theatre, and is part of the Honors Program. After graduation, Ferguson intends to intern with an environmental policy or advocacy organization before entering a graduate program to focus on environmental policy or political ecology.

The International Scholar Laureate Program provides career-related hands-on experience to its participants. They join other promising future leaders in an environmental and cultural learning experience. As part of the program, Masa will discuss urban planning with top Brazilian environmentalists and ecologists, as well as examine innovative government and grassroots initiatives at the national and community levels to prevent pollution, conserve resources, and preserve endangered species. After graduation, Masa’s main objective is to collaborate with fellow ecologists and environmentalists to manage the ecosystem’s ability to be preserved, conserved, and restored. She hopes to aid in environmental education to further environmental awareness and create a better harmony between humans and the environment. She is a member of Care2give and Environmental Defense, and she is also a skilled cartographer.
