The work of Peace Corps Fellow and Politics and Government graduate student Kimberly Wright has culminated in the 2005 Economic Development Almanac—a valuable tool for businesses and investors interested in locating or expanding in the Bloomington-Normal community. As a graduate assistant with the Economic Development Council (EDC) of the Bloomington-Normal Area since August 2004, Wright worked to compile information that provides a detailed, complete look at McLean County and the Bloomington-Normal area for existing and prospective businesses. On April 6, the EDC presented the almanac to approximately 200 community members at the 1st Annual Economic Development Almanac Breakfast, and Executive Director Marty Vanags recognized Wright for her contributions.

The EDC seeks to encourage retention and expansion of businesses in the area in order to promote the overall well-being of our community. The 150-page 2005 Economic Development Almanac is designed to provide the most detailed information about the local economy to site location consultants, real estate brokers, and executives making key decisions about expansions and relocations. It provides a quick way to find an array of data, including basic demographic information, details about local business taxes, and contacts for community resources.

Before coming to Illinois State University, Wright served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho, and she taught in the New Orleans Parish Public School System. She is pursuing a master’s degree in Political Science with a sequence in Applied Community Development. As a Peace Corps Fellow, after her intensive year on campus, she will complete an eleven-month internship with a U.S. community or organization that needs her skills.

In addition to the hard copies distributed at the breakfast and available from the EDC, the information from the almanac is online at http://www.bnbiz.org/.
