On Sunday, July 17, the ISU Solar Car Race Team began the North American Solar Challenge, a 2,500-mile race from Austin, Texas to Calgary,Alberta. The team is comprised of around 20 students and faculty, most from the Department of Physics, and the Challenge is the longest race of solar-powered vehicles in the world and very tough to complete. In fact, 42 teams from U.S. and Canadian universities, companies, and organizations pre-registered for the race, but after extensive pre-race “scrutineering” by race officials to make sure vehicles met race criteria and safety requirements, only 26 made it to the starting line. “We’ve already beaten over 30% of the competition,” said Solar Car Team faculty advisor and Professor of Physics Daniel Holland. The race is expected to take 10 days, concluding on July 27. The team’s day-to-day progress can be monitored by visiting team’s day-to-day progress can be monitored by visiting www.solarcar.ilstu.edu

| Dr. Sandra Metts |
The moment in a close relationship when one partner acts in such a way that threatens the other's identity and experiences of being valued, called positive face, is a moment of particular interest for Dr.Sandra Metts, Professor of Communication. “Although it may not be as immediately apparent, the conversation of a couple on a first date, the attempt to gain forgiveness from someone we have hurt, the challenge of dealing with an embarrassing moment, and even the dynamics of a classroom discussion are all manifestations of the human need to know and be known—to create share meaning.”
