| Dr. John McHale | Danny Glover, actor and activist, has committed to providing voiceover for a documentary by Assistant Professor of Communication John McHale. Picture This: The Battle to Save Joe Amrine is a new version of McHale's original documentary that was used to free Missouri death row inmate Joe Amrine in 2003. The original documentary was featured at the United Nations Human Rights Convention in Geneva in April 2004 and continues to be shown at film festivals around the country. McHale anticipates release of the new version in early 2005.

Dr. Gregory Ferrence and students display laptops funded by NSF CAREER Award. | Chemistry Professor Gregory Ferrence has been awarded $520,000 in grant money through the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award. "CAREER awards support exceptionally promising college and university junior faculty who are committed to the integration of research and education," says NSF Director Rita Colwell. "We recognize these faculty members, new in their careers, as most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st Century." With Ferrence’s award, Illinois State has now earned three CAREER awards—an impressive feat for any institution.

Rhonda Starkey and Dr. Dorothy Lee | Esteemed College of Arts and Sciences emerita faculty member Dorothy E. Lee was the guest of honor at the inaugural Women's Mentoring Conference, held September 18 in the Bone Student Center. Lee, who was "instrumental in creating the Women's Studies program and minor," according to History Department Chair John Freed, recently established the Dorothy E. Lee Endowment to assist nontraditional women from rural areas in Illinois who are working on a degree program at Illinois State. The first scholarship award was presented at the conference to mathematics student Rhonda Starkey.

Flame Statue in front of Stevenson Hall | Over 20 retired professors, from disciplines spanning the College, have agreed to serve on the College's new Emeritus Faculty Advisory Board. "The College has a proud history, and the link between the proud past, bright present, and promising future is our emeritus faculty," said Dean Olson. The Board will provide the Dean with input on current College initiatives; assist with the writing of the College's emeritus faculty newsletter; help to narrate the institutional history of the University—particularly the College; and assist in the development of new initiatives for enhancing the retirement experiences of all emeriti faculty.

The Illinois School Psychology Internship Consortium (ISPIC), an affiliate of the Department of Psychology, has been awarded a $38,000 grant by the Illinois Board of Higher Education under the Higher Education Cooperation Act (HECA). ISPIC consists of a number of cooperating school districts, clinics, university programs, hospitals, and mental health agencies located across Illinois that offer a broad range of experiences for doctoral students each year. The mission of ISPIC is to improve the lives of children, adolescents, and their families by traning interns who promote the highest quality education and mental health services. Clinical Assistant Professor Dr. Brenda Huber serves as project director.

| Dr. Fusun Akman | Dr. Fusun Akman joins the Department of Mathematics from Coastal Carolina University, where she served as an assistant professor since 1999. Her research interests include generalizations of algebraic structures in differential geometry to modern mathematical physics as well as fractal properties and distributions of prime numbers in the integers. Dr. Akman earned her Ph.D. in 1993 from Yale University, and she has served on the faculty at Utah State University and as an H.C. Wang Assistant Professor at Cornell University.
