Associate Dean Sam Catanzaro with members of the RPRC. | This week marks the formal launching of the College's new research support programs: the Research Enhancement Awards Program and the Travel Supplement Grant Program. The College asked the Research Proposal Review Committee (RPRC), a committee of elected faculty, to review and provide input on draft guidelines and application forms for the two programs. "These new research support programs should not only help to reward faculty and raise the College's profile as a research institution, but they should also help in our continuing effort to decrease our dependence on state funding by increasing the level of external funding of research," said Dean Gary Olson.

| Dr. Michael Sublett | Geography Professor Michael Sublett began his latest research project 20 years ago while traveling by car from a conference. He realized that the geographic location he was driving through was the site of contention about 100 years back, when a struggle had occurred between forces that wanted to retain the commission method of county government Illinois functioned under since its statehood and those that coveted access to the township system they had witnessed in New England or elsewhere back east. In August, Sublett’s project culminated in the release of his latest book, Township: Diffusion and Persistence of Grassroots Government in Illinois, 1850-2000.

On Wednesday, September 29, the Academic Senate formally approved revisions to the College Council bylaws. College Council chair Dr. Nancy Lind said, "The by-laws have been under revision for 2 years, and I would like to thank the Senate Rules Committee and the Academic Senate for their careful review. The revised by-laws now make clear the procedures to be used in selecting administrative search committee members for the rank of Dean and above. The revisions largely allow departments to maintain autonomy in their selection of search committee members yet set minimal standards for how these selections should be made. It seems a perfect balance." The updated bylaws can be accessed on the College's website.
