Three faculty members have won the College Outstanding Service Award for their extraordinary service accomplishments.  The College Council announced the selection of Dr. Susan Burt (English), Dr. Mary Campbell (Social Work), and Dr. Cynthia Moore (Biological Sciences) as the 2004 winners.  According to Associate Dean Jonathan Rosenthal, "Faculty receiving the Outstanding Service Award have demonstrated remarkable service to the College and University, their professional and scholarly organizations, and, often, to the community. The College is very grateful to these individuals whose contributions not only make the University function well on a daily basis but also have had significant impact in some extraordinary ways."

well on a daily basis but also have had significant impact in some extraordinary ways."

Dr. Susan Burt is the authority on matters relating to the Institutional Review Board for her department and has helped to professionalize how graduate students with a pedagogical focus treat research with human subjects.  She serves as mentor to many of the English department's international students in both formal and informal ways.  She has also served as member of the English Department Council and two search committees.  She offers professional service to three journals.

Dr. Mary Campbell has a distinguished record of service to the University and the community.  Her advocacy for victims of domestic violence and the homeless in our area has resulted in significant services to these populations.  Her activities contributed to the establishment of Neville House, Clare House, and Safe Harbor.  She serves on the Illinois Children's Mental Health Partnership, recently convened by Governor Blagojavich.  As a faculty member, she has involved her students in a variety of service learning activities locally, in Chicago, and in Appalachia.  She has served her department and the University through service on innumerable committees, through high-level searches including Provost and President searches, and through membership on the Acadmic Senate.

Dr. Cynthia Moore serves as Director of Biology Teacher Education and has chaired her department's Faculty Committee on Instruction.  She is the director of the highly successful PRISM program (Partnership for Reserach in Science and Math Education) for which she has secured over $2,000,000 in National Science Foundation funding since 1998.  Professionally, she has served on NSF review panels and has presided at numerous conference sessions.  She also finds time to be a mentor to a floor in the residence halls.

In selecting award winners, the committee empaneled by the College Council considers the level of service activities and the outcomes of the service activities.  Service includes professional service to the University and to governmental, community, and not-for-profit organizations, as well as strong citizenship that provides for the effective operation of University units, or of professional, community, or not-for-profit organizations.
