Dr. Felissa Lashley
Felissa Lashley, Dean and Professor at the College of Nursing at Rutgers, has authored an award-winning book, Clinical Genetics in Nursing Practice. Dr. Lashley earned her Ph.D. degree specializing in human genetics and biochemistry from ISU in 1973. She is also the first nurse to be certified as a Ph.D. medical geneticist by the American Board of Medical Genetics and is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. In 2005, Dr. Lashley was inducted into the Illinois State University College of Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. Dr. Lashley’s book received the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award. “The book helps nurses ‘think genetically’ and integrate genetic concepts and principles into their practice,” said Lashley. During the past decade, scientific discoveries in the field of genetics have provided knowledge with potential for tremendous influence on health care.

Dr. Roger Eggleton
Dr. Roger Eggleton
Roger Eggleton, Professor of Mathematics, has received the prestigious Carl B. Allendoerfer Award, which is awarded annually to an article of expository excellence published in Mathematics Magazine. Eggleton’s paper, “Upper Bounds on the Sum of Principal Divisors of an Integer,” coauthored with William P. Galvin, was published in June 2004. The Award, established in 1976, is named for Carl B. Allendoerfer, a distinguished mathematician at the University of Washington and President of the Mathematical Association of America, 1959-60. “The Allendoerfer Award is very public and unsolicited confirmation that others have been delighted by what we found and the way we shared our insights,” said Eggleton. “It will mean a lot more people read that paper—I hope they enjoy it as well.”

Dr. Sherrilyn Billger
Sherrilyn Billger, Assistant Professor of Economics, has been named a Research Fellow with the Institute of Labor Studies (IZA), in Bonn, Germany. With this appointment Billger joins an elite international group of scholars at IZA, which is an independent research institution that cooperates closely with the University of Bonn. “Professor Billger's appointment as a Research Fellow is a professional milestone,” said Dr. James Payne, Chair the Department of Economics. “It not only reflects positively on her research agenda but also provides distinction to the Department.”

Dr. Ann Beck
Dr. Ann Beck
Ann R. Beck, Professor of Speech Pathology, was recently appointed Assistant to the Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences. Beck’s duties in this new half-time position include assisting Associate Dean Sally Parry in the administration of the general education program, assisting Associate Dean Sam Catanzaro on facilities and research issues, and assisting Dean Olson on special projects. “Dr. Beck’s solid research and teaching background along with her administrative experience as director of the Eckelman-Taylor Speech and Hearing Clinic will serve her well in this new position,” said Dean Olson. “I would like to thank Provost Presley for supporting this position in light of the College’s increased administrative responsibilities in the last few years.”

The Department of Psychology recently announced the opening of the Children’s Research Laboratory (CRL). The new research group studies various aspects of childhood development from preschool age to adolescence. Specifically, the group focuses on how the institutions of family, education, and media influence and shape children’s development and growth. Findings from the studies conducted in the CRL will be reported at professional conferences, published in scientific journals, and described in the popular press. “The Children’s Research Laboratory represents a collaborative research effort in which experts from various strands of child development have partnered to create a very powerful research unit,” said Dean Olson. “This will benefit our community, and their findings will be of great interest.”

Dr. Olcay Akman
Dr. Olcay Akman
Olcay Akman joins the Department of Mathematics as an assistant professor after completing a year at ISU as a visiting assistant professor. Previous to coming to ISU, he served on the faculty at the College of Charleston, Cornell University, Utah State University, and Coastal Carolina University. Dr. Akman’s research interests include modeling for lifetime data, weighted distributions, selection models, and statistical computing. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maine.
