Carol Sorenson, a senior majoring in actuarial science, has been awarded the prestigious John Culver Wooddy Scholarship by the Actuarial Foundation. Each year, four students in the world receive a Wooddy Scholarship, established by the distinguished actuary’s estate. Eligible applicants for the scholarship, who come from all over the world, must have successfully completed at least one actuarial examination, rank in the top quartile of their class, and be nominated by a professor at their school. “In effect, Carol has been judged to be among the four best students in actuarial science in the class of 2006 in the world,” said Krzysztof M. Ostaszewski, Actuarial Program Director and Professor of Mathematics. “This is the first time any of our students has received this award. Hopefully there will be more such awards in the future.”

Dean Olson announced the creation of this new teaching award last spring based on input gathered during the strategic planning process. The new award mirrors the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Scholarly Achievement in that it will comprise two awards of $3,000 each, one for a tenured faculty member and one for a pretenured, tenure-track faculty member. “Multiple recognitions for good and scholarly teaching are important as we have many outstanding teachers on campus who deserve recognition, and good teaching can occur in a number of ways,” said Kathleen McKinney, Cross Endowed Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and Professor of Sociology.
