Carol Sorenson, a senior majoring in actuarial science, has been awarded the prestigious John Culver Wooddy Scholarship by the Actuarial Foundation. Each year, four students in the world receive a Wooddy Scholarship, established by the distinguished actuary’s estate. Eligible applicants for the scholarship, who come from all over the world, must have successfully completed at least one actuarial examination, rank in the top quartile of their class, and be nominated by a professor at their school. “In effect, Carol has been judged to be among the four best students in actuarial science in the class of 2006 in the world,” said Krzysztof M. Ostaszewski, Actuarial Program Director and Professor of Mathematics. “This is the first time any of our students has received this award. Hopefully there will be more such awards in the future.”

Sorenson served as the President of ISU’s Actuarial Club last year and spent this past summer as an intern learning the challenges of global insurance at Zurich Financial Services in Switzerland, an opportunity offered by the Katie Insurance School. Sorenson has completed the Katie Insurance School Leadership Certification Program, and she is a member of the Presidential Scholars Club, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Golden Key. While working towards her undergraduate degree in Actuary Science with a minor in economics, Sorenson has been awarded several scholarships. “To me, the Wooddy Scholarship is of the most significance,” said Sorenson. “I’ve worked very hard throughout my time at ISU both in classes and the Actuarial Club so it is really exciting to see all that hard work culminate in an award that’s really going to put the ISU Actuarial Program on the map.”
