Hitchens received a degree in philosophy, politics, and economics from Balliol College, University of Oxford, in 1970. He began his journalism career in England during the 1970s as a writer for the Evening
Standard. He worked as a foreign correspondent for London’s Daily Express and as foreign editor for the New Statesman. Hitchens has served as Harper’s Washington editor and as the U.S. correspondent for The Spectator and The Time Literary Supplement. After the 9/11 terrorist event occurred, Hitchens’s resignation from his long-term position as a columnist for the periodical The Nation was widely publicized. Since then, his essays, columns, and television appearances have focused on topics such as the 9/11 event, global terrorism, the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and U.S. election issues.
