Corporeal Christopher E. Zimny
Christopher E. Zimny
Christopher E. Zimny, BS ’00, has been posthumously awarded the United Service Organization (USO) Marine of the Year. Corporal Zimny was selected for this prestigious recognition from among thousands of Marines. A graduate from the School of Social Work, Zimny enlisted in the Marines a month after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Zimny then became an assault squad leader in the northern Babil Province in Iraq, where he conducted over 120 combat patrols. Zimny was wounded on three occasions, earning two Purple Hearts, but continued to lead his patrol until he was killed, along with two other Marines, when his patrol was attacked with an improvised explosive device on Iraqi Election Day, January 31, 2005. “I wasn’t surprised to learn he’d won two Purple Hearts,” said Judith Sevel, College Advisor. “He was the kind of person geared toward service to others.”

The College's Community Advisory Board—a group of Bloomington-Normal community leaders brought together to help strengthen College/Community ties—held its fall meeting last week and developed several new initiatives. The Board discussed ways to expand the College/Community internship pipeline. "Arts and Sciences students have much to offer the community's businesses and organizations and we would like to see more of our students placed in your organizations to further their career training," said Dean Olson. The Board also discussed ways in which the community could play a role in recruiting and retaining high quality administrators and faculty to the College. One such initiative developed by the Board was the creation of "community mentors," or Board members who would "adopt" a new faculty member and introduce them to various aspects of the B-N community.

Last week, Tremont Grade School students presented one of their fifth grade Learning Center class projects—a calendar with photos and histories of local barns—to ISU Writing Project faculty and graduate students as well as President Bowman, Provost Presley, Dean Olson, and English Department Chair Tim Hunt as a sample of innovative research projects in central Illinois schools. Through this project, Tremont students were able to interview barn owners, write text and poetry for the calendar, and learn about the production process. Chelsea Risinger, now a 6th-grader who worked on the project, told President Bowman that farmers have little need for barns now because machinery is too big and farming has changed.

WGLT 89.1 Logo
WGLT, ISU's public radion station, held a 12-hour on-air fundraiser on September 19 to raise money for the critical ongoing needs of hurricane Katrina survivors. GLT listeners contributed $4500 to relief efforts for Katrina survivors relocating to McLean County and to recovery and aid efforts nationwide. Contributions came in from all over central Illinois, including $71.99 from two Normal youngsters who pooled their savings to contribute to the cause. “The money we raised was significant but equally important was the opportunity to educate our listeners on the evolving needs of those so profoundly affected by this tragedy,” said Bruce Bergethon, GLT General Manager. “It was heartening to meet people working on the front lines of the relief effort and learn first hand about the survivors right here at home and across the country.”
