WGLT Holds Katrina Marathon

WGLT, ISU's public radion station, held a 12-hour on-air fundraiser on September 19 to raise money for the critical ongoing needs of hurricane Katrina survivors. GLT listeners contributed $4500 to relief efforts for Katrina survivors relocating to McLean County and to recovery and aid efforts nationwide. Contributions came in from all over central Illinois, including $71.99 from two Normal youngsters who pooled their savings to contribute to the cause. “The money we raised was significant but equally important was the opportunity to educate our listeners on the evolving needs of those so profoundly affected by this tragedy,” said Bruce Bergethon, GLT General Manager. “It was heartening to meet people working on the front lines of the relief effort and learn first hand about the survivors right here at home and across the country.”

Programming for the day included a special edition of GLT Jazz featuring music from New Orleans, interviews with Red Cross and United Way volunteers and staff, and a special encore broadcast of Higher Ground—the recent Jazz at Lincoln Center benefit concert for Katrina survivors. Volunteers staffed the GLT phone bank from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. One veteran GLT volunteer even dedicated her entire day to the effort and worked the phones for 12 hours straight.

Both the United Way of McLean County Katrina Relief Fund and the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund are still in need of financial support. Contributions are welcome at 309-828-7383 and 800-435-7669, respectively.

WGLT, 89.1 in Bloomington/Normal and 103.5 in Peoria, is a National Public Radio affiliate licensed to Illinois State University. GLT offers news, blues, and jazz programming to listeners in Central Illinois and on the worldwide web at www.wglt.org.
