Rainer Grobe, Distinguished Professor of Physics, and Q. Charles Su, Professor of Physics, have been awarded the prestigious 2006 American Physical Society (APS) Undergraduate Research Prize. The highly esteemed award is given annually to only one institution. The award cites Grobe and Su for “their outstanding effort at creating a successful and renowned optical theory program at Illinois State University, and for their exemplary involvement of undergraduates in this research.” The APS Undergraduate Research Prize, started in 1986, includes a $5,000 stipend to the recipients and a $5,000 unrestricted grant for research in physics at Illinois State. “We are thrilled to have been chosen as the recipients of this prestigious national award. The Women’s Studies Program recently held a planning retreat to begin drafting a five-year development plan. Julie Hile, an organizational consultant and Director of the Hile Group, facilitated the meeting that was attended by thirty people, including women’s studies affiliated faculty and interested faculty, staff, and graduate students. The Hile Group has also donated $10,000 in services to facilitate the planning process. Alison Bailey, Director of Women’s Studies Program, opened the retreat by reporting on the increased support to the Program received from Dean Olson and College of Arts and Sciences. In the Fall Address Dean Olson announced, “Now that the Program has a permanent director and assistant director in place, the College has committed substantial new resources to the Women’s Studies Program, increasing funding for programming, personnel, travel, and operations. As the Program continues to grow and become increasingly more important part of Illinois State University more important part of Illinois State University’s intellectual landscape, I believe it will become appropriate to begin discussions about whether the program should move toward full departmental status.”

This week, School of Communication public relations students helped organize and publicize the annual Russell Rush RoofSit. The event is sponsored by local radio station celebrity Russell Rush to raise money and awareness for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), the condition that took the life of Rush’s niece in 2002. The students organized press kits and volunteer efforts for the event. “This is yet another example of College of Arts and Sciences' students organizing to help the local community,” said Dean Olson. “I commend the efforts of these public relations students and all of our students, faculty, and staff who participated in the event.”
