According to Senator Stevenson, it would be a place where “leaders, including academicians, would gather periodically to discuss practical solutions to the systemic weakness developing everywhere in democracies.” During his campus visit, Senator Stevenson also met with President Bowman, administration in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Stevenson Center students.
Named for the Bloomington-Normal native, Illinois Governor, Presidential candidate, and U.N. Ambassador, the Stevenson Center strives to carry on Adlai II’s spirit of public service. The Center helps communities in the local area, across the state and nation, and internationally to reach their development goals through direct service by placing graduate student interns in the communities. Thus, the Stevenson Center facilitates the training of graduate students from the Departments of Economics, Politics and Government, and Sociology-Anthropology as they become the community and economic development professionals of tomorrow. The Stevenson Center and its students are dedicated to public service and Illinois State’s mission of “creating the most supportive and productive community possible to serve the citizens of Illinois and beyond.”
Senator Stevenson, honorary chair of the Stevenson Center, is a strong supporter of the Center’s mission, and he believes, as his father did, that facilitating cross-cultural exchange in the development process is critical for global peace.
