| Stanley Fish | Internationally renowned scholar Stanley Fish will deliver a lecture entitled "Three on a Match: Intelligent Design, Holocaust Denial, Postmodernism" at Illinois State University's Old Main Room on Thursday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m. A notoriously controversial speaker, Fish is the author of a dozen books and hundreds of articles, including frequent contributions to The New York Times, Harper's, and Atlantic Monthly.

Doug Jennings addresses the audience after receiving his award | School of Communication faculty, alumni, and students garnered major awards from the Illinois Speech and Theatre Association (ISTA) last weekend during the Association’s annual convention. Douglas Jennings, School of Communication Associate Director, won the Association’s top award, the W.W. Sanford Award, for outstanding lifetime achievement to the association and to the communication discipline.

| Civil Service Forum | On Thursday, October 20, the College sponsored its semi-annual Civil Service Forum—a luncheon gathering of all of the College’s civil service employees followed by a question and answer session with Dean Olson. Dean Olson gave a brief update on the financial status of the College, stating that things were looking better and that the College may be able to fill all 51 of its vacant faculty lines over the next three years. He also noted that the College is currently gearing up for a dramatic expansion of summer school, and he asked staff to help in advertising the change and in getting the word out to students. Finally, Dean Olson reported that it looks as though the move to get civil service representation on College-level committees will pass through the Academic Senate. He said he hoped this would trickle down to departmental-level committees.

| Habitat for Humanity | Students in a Politics and Government Community Service Leadership Seminar are hosting a concert to raise funds for construction of Habitat for Humanity houses in the Hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast. The concert is scheduled for Friday, October 28, at 6:00 p.m. in Capen Auditorium in Edwards Hall on the Illinois State University campus.

| Dr. Jean Sawyer | Jean Sawyer joins the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology as an assistant professor. Previous to coming to ISU, she served as a research assistant in the Stuttering Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois where she conducted a variety of studies regarding the etiology, epidemiology and symptomatology of stuttering in young children. Dr. Sawyer’s research interests include neurophysiology basis of speech and language and neurologically based speech disorders. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Iowa in 1976, a master’s degree in Linguistics from the University of Illinois in 2001, and received her Ph.D. from University of Illinois in 2004.
