School of Communication faculty, alumni, and students garnered major awards from the Illinois Speech and Theatre Association (ISTA) last weekend during the Association’s annual convention. Douglas Jennings, School of Communication Associate Director, won the Association’s top award, the W.W. Sanford Award, for outstanding lifetime achievement to the association and to the communication discipline.

“There is no one more deserving of the Sanford Award than Doug Jennings, who is the national opinion leader on K-12 communication education as well as the director of our Communication Teacher Education program which has been recognized as the best in the nation,” said Larry Long, Executive Director of the School of Communication

also won awards. Chelsea Cheatham (BS ‘03) was named the New Communication Teacher of the Year, and Marvin Kleinau (BSE ‘52; MSE ‘60) was awarded the School of Communication’s Outstanding Achievement Award. "We honored Marvin Kleinau because he was a great competitor when he was a student at ISU in the 1950s, and as an alumnus, he has continued to provide a tremendous amount of moral and financial support for our programs," said Long.

ISTA recently accepted an offer from the School of Communication at Illinois State to operate as the executive office for the organization.
