Debate Team Wins Award
ISU Debate Team
The ISU debate team recently traveled to Kansas City nbsp;and competed in a tournament where the team received the best “newcomer” award—a prestigious award given to the best up-and-coming program in the Midwest. This is a good sign for a team that was re-established only one year ago. "Rebuilding a debate team is challenging work, especially in an age of fiscal belt-tightening," said Dr. Joseph Zompetti, Assistant Professor of Communication and Director of Forensics. "So, to be recognized and appreciated by our peers in this way is not only affirmation of what we're doing, but also encouraging as we continue to make debate a viable and long-term program at Illinois State University."
In the tournament, debaters Liz Thompson (senior, Commuication Studies) and Alex Berger (sophomore, Philosophy) advanced to the semi-finals where they were defeated on a split decision by the University of Missouri at Kansas City, which was the top-seeded team from preliminary rounds. Thompson and Berger received the “best representatives of debate" award at the tournament. In addition, Thompson received the top speaker award and Berger was sixth. Xavier Hernandez (first year student, General Studies) also received seventh-place in individual speaker awards.
