Three faculty members have won the College Outstanding Service Award for their extraordinary service accomplishments.  The College Council announced the selection of Gary Klass, Associate Professor of Politics and Government; Sabine Loew, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences; and Janice Neuleib, Professor of English, as the 2005 winners.
Each year the committee selects one winner from each of the College's three divisions: humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Winners of the award are eligible to be nominated in future years for the Outstanding University Service Award. "All of the portfolios that the committee read were impressive," said Maria Pao, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages and Chair of the College Council Service Award Committee. "But the award winners demonstrated a level of generosity and dedication to their students, university, profession, and community which we found really exceptional and worthy of recognition."

the Outstanding University Service Award.

Gary Klass has been extremely active in the ISU-IWU student chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He co-founded this chapter in 1993 and has since served as faculty advisor or project co-director. He is also active in his profession. As one of the individuals who submitted a letter of recommendation on his behalf stated, “Dr. Klass has a national reputation as a servant of the academic community and a facilitator of research and communication.” At the University level, Professor Klass has served on the Academic Senate and he created and administered the listserv for ISUTEACH, an asynchronous internet discussion about teaching at Illinois State University.

Sabine Loew has an extensive record of service at the departmental, college, and university levels. She has served on her department’s facilities planning, curriculum, and seminar committees. She has been the section head for the Behavior, Evolution, Ecology and Systematics (BEES) section and is currently serving as Vice Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences. She has been a member of several College search committees and is the newly appointed College Ombudsperson. Her service at the university level includes being a member of the University Curriculum Committee and the University Biosafety Committee, and chairing a subcommittee of Educating Illiniois.

Janice Neuleib

Janice Neuleib’s Department Chair indicated in his letter of nomination that “no one in the Department of English has a broader, deeper, or more sustained record of service than Professor Neuleib.” Her Service Porfolio substantiates this statement. Throughout her career at ISU, Professor Neuleib has been a member of numerous committees at departmental, college, and university levels. She also served eight years as the Director of the Writing Program. Her professional service includes being a past President of the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. She is currently the Executive Secretary for this association.

In selecting award winners, the committee empanelled by the College Council considers the level of service activities and the outcomes of the service activities.  Service includes professional service to the University and to governmental, community, and not-for-profit organizations, as well as strong citizenship that provides for the effective operation of University units, or of professional, community, or not-for-profit organizations.
