The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce its class of 2006 Hall of Fame Inductees—a group of 11 outstanding leaders in their fields from across the nation. “This year’s class of inductees is extremely impressive,” said Dean Olson. “We have leaders in education, government, business, and law who have all reached the pinnacle of their careers. We are thrilled that they will all be back on our campus in February.”  A reception for the Inductees is open to the campus community on Friday, February 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the Founder’s Suite in Bone Student Center. All 11 of the Hall of Famers will be on campus February 17-18th for festivities related to related to the formal induction ceremony.

Dr. Nathalie op de Beeck 
The College of Arts and Sciences faculty won two of this year’s University’s Service Awards, according to an announcement from the Office of the Provost. Dr. Mary Campbell, Associate Professor of Social Work, was awarded the Outstanding University Service Award, which honors Illinois State University’s most exceptional leaders in service. Dr. Nathalie op de Beeck, Assistant Professor of English, won the University Service Initiative Award, which honors faculty members who, early in their academic careers, demonstrate excellence in service to the University. “College faculty members are not only outstanding teachers and researchers, but they are also dedicated to service as is evidenced by these awards," said Dean Olson. "I commend Professors Campbell and op de Beeck for their service to the College, the University, and their professional communities."

Tara Reeser, Director of the English Publications Unit and a 1997 graduate of the English master’s degree program, recently made a financial commitment to help honor students pursuing a career in publishing through the Publishing and the Nonprofit Literary Arts program housed in the Department of English. Reeser has established The Publications Unit Publishing Award, which is intended to acknowledge the excellent work of students involved in the study of publishing and nonprofit literary arts. The Award was established as an open fund in the Illinois State University Foundation and may be increased at any time through additional gifts. “I really enjoy working with the students at the unit, so being able to acknowledge their valuable work through this award means a lot to me,” said Reeser.

Ricardo Meza
Ricardo Meza, a 1986 alum of political science and a member of the College’s Attorneys Advisory Council, has been named Midwest Regional Counsel for MALDEF, the nation’s premier Latino civil rights organization. Based in Chicago, Meza is responsible for MALDEF litigation and public policy matters in 10 Midwestern states, focusing on education, employment, immigrants’ rights, and political access/voting rights issues for Latinos. Meza has over a dozen years of litigation experience in state and federal courts, primarily as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago and El Paso. In the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and General Crimes Section, he prosecuted large-scale narcotics trafficking, money laundering,health care fraud, and other white collar fraud. “Ricardo Meza brings strong leadership and litigation skills to MALDEF,” said John Trasviña, MALDEF Senior Vice President for Law and Policy. “His legal advocacy is especially needed now as the Latino population grows throughout the Midwest.”

Tickets are now on sale for WGLT’s Celtic Christmas at the Castle to be held Thursday, December 8 at The Castle Theater in Bloomington. Featuring Bloomsday and SullivanBurton, along with members of Exorna, The Old Men Boys, and other acoustic musicians from the Twin Cities,Peoria, and Champaign, proceeds from this holiday concert benefit the GLT Equipment Fund. Bands are donating their time and talents to participate in a traditional Irish seisun (an informal gathering of musicians playing for their own enjoyment). “It’s like one big jam session, with more fiddles, mandolins, and guitars than you’ll ever see in one place,” said GLT General Manager Bruce Bergethon. “The Castle Theater is filled with comfortable sofas and overstuffed chairs, so it will not only be the best music you’ve heard in a long time—you’ll feel like you’re in your living room. Singing along is encouraged.”

In accordance with the University's and College's goal of promoting quality research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, the School of Communication recently took a strong contingent of undergraduate and graduate students to the annual conference of the National Communication Association (NCA) held in Boston, MA. Numerous undergraduate and graduate students attended the conference, with several presenting individual papers and participating in poster and panel sessions. In addition, the School's undergraduate student association, COMM (Communication Opportunities for Majors and Minors), was selected by the NCA as one of the top four communication student clubs in the country based on their advancement of the discipline, professional development of members, and community service. "I'm really excited that we took so many students to the NCA conference this year,” said Dr. Steve Hunt, Associate Professor of Communication and COMM faculty advisor. “This is quite an honor for the COMM organization, and it bodes really well for our School and the discipline to be able to get undergraduates involved in a national conference.”
