Tara Reeser, Director of the English Publications Unit and a 1997 graduate of the English master’s degree program, recently made a financial commitment to help honor students pursuing a career in publishing through the Publishing and the Nonprofit Literary Arts program housed in the Department of English. Reeser has established The Publications Unit Publishing Award, which is intended to acknowledge the excellent work of students involved in the study of publishing and nonprofit literary arts. The Award was established as an open fund in the Illinois State University Foundation and may be increased at any time through additional gifts. “I really enjoy working with the students at the unit, so being able to acknowledge their valuable work through this award means a lot to me,” said Reeser.

Reeser was recruited to pursue a master’s degree in the Department of English by Professor Lucia Getsi, and she credits Getsi and her course of study at Illinois State for re-directing her career path. As director of the unit she once worked in, Reeser noticed that while the English department had funds to award students in other fields of study, there was no award for students in the field of publishing. “I wanted to create an award for the students because they are embarking on a unique field of study within the department,” said Reeser. “I hope this award serves as recognition to the stellar work they do within this program.”

The Publications Unit is a service and instructional branch of the Department of English, providing editorial, technical, marketing/advertising, and desktop publishing/production support for the creative/literary/scholarly publications housed under the Unit, which include American Book Review, Spoon River Poetry Review, Mandorla, the Sinclair Lewis Society Newsletter, The Illinois Association of Teachers of English Newsletter, the Illinois English Bulletin, and the small press Fiction Collective Two. The Publications Unit also serves the vital role of providing educational and practical experience for the department’s graduate assistants and undergraduate interns interested in small nonprofit presses, journals, and scholarly publications.
