The College of Arts and Sciences faculty did very well in the University awards program for outstanding teachers winning two Outstanding Teacher Awards and three University Teaching Initiative Awards, according to an announcement from the Office of the Provost. Dr. Raymond Clemens (Professor of History) won the Outstanding Teacher Award, which recognizes tenure track faculty whose teaching accomplishments are exceptionally significant and meritorious among their colleagues across campus, and who also have received previously the College Outstanding Teaching Award. Douglas K. Jennings (Associate Director of the School of Communication) won the Outstanding University Teacher Award – Category II, which recognizes full or part-time teachers with non-tenure track appointments. “I am pleased to see that College faculty have won so many of the University’s teaching awards this year,” said Dean Olson. “These individuals are truly impressive, and I want to congratulate them all.”

The College also boasts three University Teaching Initiative Award winners: Dr. Toure Reed (Assistant Professor of History), Dr. Elizabeth King (Assistant Professor of Geography-Geology), and Dr. Craig McLauchlan (Assistant Professor of Chemistry). The University Teaching Award Initiative Award recognizes faculty members who are relatively new to the teaching profession and who have shown considerable promise in teaching.

Arts and Sciences graduate students also did well in the University competition. Anna Carmon (Communication) and Susan Spangler (English) won University Graduate Student Teaching Awards.

The University Outstanding Teaching Awards Program exists to honor and recognize individuals who have achieved excellence as teachers at Illinois State University. By honoring such individuals, the University demonstrates its commitment to teaching as a scholarly endeavor, emphasizes outstanding engagement with student learning, and provides incentives for faculty members to pursue activities that enhance them as teachers. The winners will be formally recognized at the Founder’s Day Convocation on February 16, 2006 and at the College Awards Ceremony on March 1, 2006.
