| Dean Gary Olson |
Dear Faculty and Staff
I would like to welcome you back following what I hope was a pleasant and productive (in whatever sense you wanted to be productive!) holiday break. We are on our way to another great year in the College of Arts and Sciences. Below is a mid-year update on a few of the important initiatives we will be pursuing this spring.I am pleased to report that in December, the College allocated over $352,000 in mid-year enhancement funds. The funds came from resources provided by both the Provost's Office and the College. We distributed these resources to departments within the College based on strategic needs identified by the departments. Special consideration was given to those departmental initiatives that clearly furthered the College's new strategic plan. This is a positive sign that the University is well on the road to fiscal health.

| President Bowman has appointed to the position of Distinguished Professor two of the College’s most outstanding faculty members: Scott K. Sakaluk, Professor of Biological Sciences, and John C. Shields, Professor of English. The Distinguished Professor designation allows the University to honor faculty members of distinction. Among the criteria for appointment are achieving national recognition for scholarly research, oustanding teaching, and significant public service. Distinguished Professors are invited to deliver one public lecture, receive a $1,000 budget per annum in support of activities as Distinguished Professor, and continue to hold the title throughout their service to Illinois State. “I was thrilled, but certainly not surprised to hear that the two distinguished professors named this year were Professor Sakaluk and Professor Shields,” said Dean Olson. "These two scholars could earn this title at any university, as they have both had a tremendous impact on the direction of research in their respective disciplines and at the same time are superior teachers in the classroom."

| Jamal Nassar |
Jamal R. Nassar has recently been granted the Choice Outstanding Book Award for his book entitled, Globalization and Terrorism: The Migration of Dreams and Nightmares. This award comes from one of the preeminent library journals in the United States, and his book was recognized for offering an important perspective on the sources of terrorism. For Nassar, terrorism has been a part of his life since his birth in Jerusalem in 1946. "I am pleased to learn of Professor Nassar's significant award," said Dean Olson. "His ability to serve as chair of his department, continue to be one of the College's most outstanding teachers, and produce award-winning research is amazing."

President Bowman works with The Challenger Leanring Center's Janet Moore on an upcoming episode | Such wide-ranging topics as antibiotics, volcanoes, heat versus temperature, and the swirling direction of toilet water will be among those discussed on “Uncommon Knowledge,” a new 2 ½-minute science program that premiered on WGLT-FM (89.1 FM and 103.5 FM in Peoria) this past Sunday and will be aired every Sunday at 9:37 a.m. during NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday. The new program is produced by Illinois State University’s WGLT radio, ISU’s Department of Physics, and the Challenger Learning Center at Prairie Aviation Museum in Bloomington. “Uncommon Knowledge” is a program designed to briefly explain everyday scientific events with a light, but rooted-in-science approach.
