The College is pleased to announce that the Research Enhancement Awards Program has been expanded in 2006 to increase the award maximum from $3000 to $3500. Those interested in applying should do so soon because the deadline is fast approaching—submissions for REAs are due to the College Office on February 28, 2006. "I am pleased to be able to offer an increase in the amount of money dedicated to these important awards," said Dean Olson. "This increase will better enable departments to cover the cost of course releases and research assistants and will provide valuable assistance to those engaged in high quality research.

Provost Presley has announced that College of Arts and Sciences faculty won an Outstanding University Researcher Award and four University Research Initiative Awards.  Dr. Charles Thompson, Professor of Ecology in the Department of Biological Sciences, has won the Outstanding University Researcher Award, which recognizes faculty whose research accomplishments are outstanding among their peers across the entire University and who have established a national and international reputation in their field. The College is also honored to have four University Research Initiative Award winners: Dr. David Cedeño, Assistant Professor of Chemistry; Dr. Alycia Hund, Assistant Professor of Psychology; Dr. Hilary Justice, Assistant Professor of English; and Dr. John Sedbrook, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences. The University Research Initiative Award recognizes new faculty members who have initiated a promising research agenda. “The College is proud to have the University recognize the outstanding research accomplished by our faculty members,” said Dean Olson. “I congratulate each of them and all the College nominees on their tremendous efforts.”

On February 4, WGLT hosts it fourth annual Jazz Masters Concert headlined by Tierney Sutton, who could walk away with the 2006 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album only four days after her vist to Normal. Opening for Tierney Sutton is lyrical guitarist Mark Elf who has been playing jazz for over three decades with nearly a dozen critically acclaimed CDs. Elf has played or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, Charles Earland, Jimmy McGriff, and Lou Donaldson. A portion of the proceeds from the GLT Jazz Masters will be donated to the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund. At 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, the Tierney Sutton band will offer a masterclass discussing and demonstrating the group process of developing arrangements and performing. This event takes place in the Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall and is free and open to the public.
