University President Al Bowman | Last week, the College allocated over $437,000 in raises to faculty and non-represented civil service employees. This year’s faculty salary adjustments targeted full and associate professors, whose salaries were the furthest below peer group averages. This was the first salary adjustment in a multi-year program initiated by President Bowman to address compensation issues for faculty and staff. Salary decisions were based on input from Department and School Faculty Status Committees and an equity study conducted by central administration. “President Bowman is to be commended for making competitive faculty and staff salaries his highest priority and for acting so quickly to address the issue in a concrete manner,” said Dean Olson. “This is a real sign that the President and institution are committed to our faculty and staff. We have high quality faculty and staff, and I agree with the President that retaining them should be our highest priority.

Greenwood Encyclopedia of American Poetry | Fourteen members of Illinois State’s Department of English and one member of the Department of Foreign Languages served as contributors to the five-volume Greenwood Encyclopedia of American Poetry, hailed as the “most comprehensive reference on American poetry ever assembled.” This four-year project takes into account “the entire range of American poetry from the colonial period to the present,” according to John Shields, Distinguished Professor of English. Shields was not only invited to serve as a contributor to the Encyclopedia but also as a member of the project’s prestigious eleven-member Advisory Board. "This is a very important contribution to scholarship in American literature," said Associate Dean Sally Parry. "We're very proud of the many faculty and staff who worked on this project."

| Peace Corps | Bernadette “Bernie” Zayas Lorenzo, a political science and Stevenson Center alumna, recently had a portion of her life story published in A Life Inspired: Tales of Peace Corps Service. A Life Inspired, released this month, commemorates the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Peace Corps and tells the stories of everyday Americans responding to the challenges of life in amazing ways as volunteers in the Peace Corps. A Life Inspired features 29 volunteers as they pursue their Peace Corps Service. These first-person stories represent the variety and diversity that is found in Peace Corps work, the countries it serves, and its volunteers. "Current Stevenson Center students and alumni are around the globe from El Salvador to Kazakhstan working with local government bodies, health service offices, small business and cooperative development organizations, and youth development programs." said Frank Beck, Director of the Stevenson Center. "Like Bernie, these students are driven to serve and the Peace Corps provides that opportunity."
