Fourteen members of Illinois State’s Department of English and one member of the Department of Foreign Languages served as contributors to the five-volume Greenwood Encyclopedia of American Poetry, hailed as the “most comprehensive reference on American poetry ever assembled.” This four-year project takes into account “the entire range of American poetry from the colonial period to the present,” according to John Shields, Distinguished Professor of English. Shields was not only invited to serve as a contributor to the Encyclopedia but also as a member of the project’s prestigious eleven-member Advisory Board. "This is a very important contribution to scholarship in American literature," said Associate Dean Sally Parry. "We're very proud of the many faculty and staff who worked on this project."

Other faculty contributors included Willard Bohn, Distinguished Professor of Foreign Languages; Victoria Frenkel Harris, Professor of English; and Russell Rutter, Professor of English. Student contributors included English graduate students, Maureen Anderson, Jennifer Billingsley, Bruce A. Erickson, Thomas L. Herakovich, Melvin G. Hill, Eric D. Lamore, Devona Mallory, Patrick Moseley, Zachary S. Petra, and Deborah Adams Renville, and English alumus Raymond Yanek (BS 1996, MS 2003).
