College Announces University Research Grants

Research Grant Recipients
The College is pleased to announce that over 50 of its faculty members received University Research Grants (URGs) for 2007. These grants foster research and creative efforts across the College, stimulate the development and submission of external grant proposals, and support the development of research and creative programs of new faculty members. The URG program includes four grant programs: New Faculty Initiative Grant, Pre-tenure Faculty Initiative Grant, Summer Faculty Fellowship, and the Faculty Research Award.These programs were designed to work in an incremental and complementary way to support diverse research and creative program development at different stages of faculty careers.
"I know the value of URG funding, and I congratulate those faculty who have been awarded grants,” said Associate Dean Sam Catanzaro. "One of the best parts of my job is to read the excellent research proposals submitted by our faculty and to work with the Research Proposal Review Committee to provide support to the very best proposals out of the many excellent proposals we receive."

New Faculty Initiative Grants are designed to support the first stages of research and creative career development of newly appointed faculty at Illinois State. Departmental mentoring is encouraged to assist applicants in strengthening their proposals. The following faculty members were awarded this grant: Bruce Burningham (Foreign Languages), Katherine Ellison (English), Doris Houston (Social Work), Steven Peters (Chemistry), Aaron Pitluck (Sociology and Anthropology), Jean Sawyer (Speech Pathology and Audiology), and David Weiden (Politics and Government).

Pre-tenure Faculty Initiative Grants support faculty members in years two through five of their appointment at Illinois State by encouraging further research or creative programs in their progress toward tenure. The following faculty members were awarded this grant: Rita Bailey (Speech Pathology and Audiology), Joan Brehm (Sociology and Anthropology), Gary Cates (Psychology), Kass Fleisher (English), Richard Hughes (History), Tena McNamara (Speech Pathology and Audiology), Katrin Paehler (History), K. Aaron Smith (English), Bernard Tamas (Politics and Government), Robert Turner (Chemistry), Stephen Van der Hoven (Geography and Mathematics), and Gaywalee Yamskulna (Mathematics).

Summer Faculty Fellowships offer salary support of up to $3000 to tenured faculty and to pre-tenured faculty who have received both the New Faculty Initiative Grant and the Pre-tenure Faculty Initiative Grant and have submitted an external grant proposal through the Research and Sponsored Programs Office. The following faculty members were awarded this grant: Jeffrey Barrett (Mathematics), Lucinda Beier (History), Gary Creasey (Psychology), Jonathan Druker (Foreign Languages), Roger Eggleton (Mathematics), Gregory Ferrence (Chemistry), Paul Garris (Biological Sciences), Rajeev Goel (Economics), Dan Holland (Physics), Marjorie Jones (Chemistry), Janie Leatherman (Politics and Government), Sabine Loew (Biological Sciences), James Pancrazio (Foreign Languages), Lou Perez (History), Robert Quandt (Chemistry), Scott Sakaluk (Biological Sciences), John Sedbrook (Biological Sciences), Charles Thompson (Biological Sciences), Maura Toro-Morn (Sociology and Anthropology), and T.Y. Wang (Politics and Government).

Faculty Research Awards support up to $2000 in research expenses excluding salary for tenured faculty members or for pre-tenure faculty members who have received both the NFIG and the PFIG awards and submitted an external grant proposal through the Research and Sponsored Programs Office. The following faculty members received this grant: Roger Anderson (Biological Sciences), Rachel Bowden (Biological Sciences), Thomas Critchfield (Psychology), Kevin Edwards (Biological Sciences), Paul Garris (Biological Sciences), Rajeev Goel (Economics), Alycia Hund (Psychology), R.K. Jayaswal (Biological Sciences), Steven Juliano (Biological Sciences), Anthony Otsuka (Biological Sciences), Lou Perez (History), Shang-Fen Ren (Physics), John Sedbrook (Biological Sciences), and Lisa Szczepura (Chemistry).

All URGs are reveiwed by the College Research Proposal Review Committee. Members of this committee are: Lee Beier (History), Ron Fortune (English), Robert "Skip" Nelson (Geography-Geology), James Reid (Foreign Languages), Epa Rosa (Physics), and Julie Webber (Politics and Government). "I want to thank this year's committee for the hard work they put into evaluating the proposals," said Dean Catanzaro.
