The College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Daniel L. Everett as the new chair of the Department of Foreign Languages. Everett—a renowned scholar of linguistics and culture who has studied over thirty languages and who can read or speak six languages fluently—comes to ISU from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, where he served as the Chair of Phonetics and Phonology in the Department of Linguistics. “I am very pleased to be joining Illinois State University’s College of Arts and Sciences,” said Dr. Everett.

| Hall of Fame |
Over 120 friends, family, and former colleagues gathered in the Old Main Room on Saturday morning to witness the induction of eleven new members into the College of Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. The new Hall of Famers and members of the audience laughed, cried, and cheered as inductees were introduced by their former professors, colleagues, and even a spouse. “This ceremony was both impressive and moving,” said Dean Olson. “We learned not only of our inductees' accomplishments as professionals, but also of their trials and triumphs as individuals. The one thread that ran throughout the ceremony was the importance of Illinois State University in all of their lives. The College and University can be proud to have produced such a wonderful group of alumni and friends.”

The College is pleased to report that in a little less than one year, the four newly designated Programs of Excellence have achieved important aspects of their overall goals, distinguishing themselves as programs unlike any other in the state of Illinois as well as making a mark nationally and internationally as innovative and unique collaborations. "I couldn't be more pleased with the progress of each of the College's New Programs of Excellence," said Dean Olson. "These Programs are already bringing national and international presitge to the University, and the best to yet to come."

| Dr. Brian James Wilkinson | Dr. Brian James Wilkinson, Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences, has been appointed to serve as a member for the Drug Discovery and Mechanisms of Antimicrobial Resistance Study Section for the Center for Scientific Review. Study sections review grant applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), make recommendations on these applications, and survey the status of research in their fields of science. “Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements, and honors,” said Toni Scarpa, Director for for The Scientific Review. “Service on a study section also requires mature judgment and objectivity as well as the ability to work effectively in a group, qualities we believe Dr. Wilkinson will bring to this important task.”

| Dr. Laura Vogel | As a person ages, the immune system begins to decline. But why does this happen? That’s a question Dr. Laura Vogel, Associate Professor of Immunology and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in Biological Sciences, is attempting to answer. “We are trying to determine why the immune system of the elderly functions poorly and what we can do to improve their health,” said Vogel. Vogel recently procured a $193,000 grant from the National Institute for Health to support her important research on the immune system. This funding will support undergraduate and graduate students who help with the research and will also support the purchase of supplies.
