Dr. Neil Smelser
Renowned sociologist and scholar Neil Smelser will deliver a lecture entitled “Why Are Terrorists’ Beliefs So Powerful?” at Illinois State University’s Old Main Room on Monday, April 3, at 7:00 p.m. Smelser’s work has focused on economic sociology, collective behavior, and sociological theory, as well as other areas of inquiry. He has served as member for the Committee on Science and Technology to Counter Terrorism for the National Research Council and as the Chair for the Panel on Behavioral, Social, and Institutional Issues and the Panel on Understanding Terrorists to Deter Terrorism for this NRC committee. He has authored or edited over 35 books including Terrorism: Perspectives from the Behavioral and Social Sciences and Discouraging Terrorism: Some Implications of 9/11. “Neil Smelser is one of the preeminent figures in sociology over the past half century,” said Nick Maroules, Chair of Department of Sociology and Anthropology. “His scholarship has had a significant and defining impact on many areas of the discipline, including, most notably, economic and psychoanalytic sociology. We are incredibly fortunate to have someone of his stature as a Visiting Distinguished Professor.”

The Grabill-Homan Peace Prize, the John and Susan Freed Scholarship, the Redbird 4 Scholarship, and the Laurine Reiske Scholarship were awarded to five extraordinary students for their exemplary academic achievements. “The Comprehensive Campaign brought three new scholarships to the College, which is wonderful for our students,” said Dean Olson. "The donors of these scholarships have allowed the College to reward five truly outstanding students, and for that, the College is very grateful."

WGLT, the College’s public radio station, is asking for volunteers to help staff pledge phones for its Spring Fund Drive, March 31-April 9. Volunteers will answer phones and take pledges from GLT supporters. Plenty of snacks will be on hand as well as meals for those working during lunch or dinner. The pledge phones will be open early from 6:00 a.m. until midnight. Most volunteers take one or more two hour shifts, though any time you have to spare is more than welcome. We are all familiar with Edmund Burke’s famous saying: “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” However, Anthony Crubaugh, Associate Professor of History, believes that statement should be clarified. “There’s no simple lesson from studying the past, or at least we don’t all learn the same lesson. However, history can serve as an important compass as we collectively chart our future direction through public policy and as we individually determine our private convictions. What we get from history is greater self-knowledge, a desire for which seems to be part of the human condition. History is the story of our common humanity and as such helps us understand who we are and how we got here.”
