DistinguishedProfessorRichardStivers
Dr.Richard Stivers
Richard Stivers, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, has been invited to deliver three lectures to the European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union located in Brussels, Belgium. The Commission is one of three primary institutions holding decision-making powers on behalf of the sovereign member states of the EU and is responsible for managing the day-to-day business of the European Union. Stivers's lectures to the Commission will draw from three of his recent publications: Shades of Loneliness: Pathologies of a Technological Society, published in 2004; “Ethical Individualism and Moral Collectivism in America,” published in Humanitas in 2003; and Technology as Magic: The Triumph of the Irrational, published in 1999. “This is a tremendous honor for Professor Stivers,” said Dean Olson. “The College is proud to have one of Illinois State's finest making significant international contributions."

Stivers’s recent research projects focus on cultural sociology and language/social linguistic theory. He has authored seven books and numerous articles. Stivers was named College of Arts and Sciences Lecturer in 1990, Outstanding University Researcher in 1999, and appointed Distinguished Professor in 2000. Stivers earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Southern Illinois University, his M.S.W. from St. Louis University, and a B.A. in Psychology from Creighton University.
