| Dr.Julia Jung | Assistant Professor of English Julie Jung has been awarded the prestigious W. Ross Winterowd Award for the most outstanding book in composition theory for her Revisionary Rhetoric, Feminist Pedagogy, and Multigenre Texts, published by Southern Illinois University Press in 2005. The award was presented by the Association of Teachers of Advanced Composition at the annual convention of the Conference on College Composition and Communication on March 24. “This is indeed a huge honor,” said Dean Olson, who was in attendance at the award ceremony in Chicago. “With this award, Professor Jung joins a pantheon of eminent scholars who have won the Winterowd Award, such as James Berlin,Sharon Crowley, Lester Faigley, Susan Miller, Jasper Neel, and Susan Wells. Clearly, she is in very good company.”

Dr. John McHale (far right) with his project co-director Dr. Dawn Beichner and President Al Bowman | Several College faculty, students, and staff were honored for their commitment to civic engagement at the University’s Civic Engagement Celebration, held on March 31 in the Founders Suiteat the Bone Student Center. The Civic Engagement Celebration is a public expression of Illinois State’s commitment to the American Democracy Project (ADP) ideals of encouraging student exploration of social and civic issues, promoting student participation in learning activities involving social or political problems, and developing in students a sense of civic commitment. During the celebration kickoff, Provost Presley announced Illinois State’s participation in a new phase of the ADP—the Political Engagement Project—which will begin next fall. Illinois State is one of only 8 of the 250 ADP participating schools to be chosen for the Political Engagement Project. Schools were chosen based on their success in promoting civic engagement during the first phase.

Murrow regional awards for the second year in a row. This year, WGLT won more first place awards that any other downstate radio station and more total awards than any other radio station in Illinois outside Chicago. “GLT's news department is a continuing source of pride for the station and for the entire University,” said General Manager Bruce Bergethon. “One of the most satisfying aspects of this year's awards is that they reflect the versatility of our journalists, as well as the excellence of the teamwork that brings GLT's daily information service to central Illinois.

Established in 1971 with one award, the Alumni Association awards program now includes four categories to recognize the accomplishments of alumni at different stages of their careers.This year a total of nine alumni were awarded honors, and eight of the recipients graduated from undergraduate and/or graduate programs in the College, including the winner of the Distinguished Alumni Award, Tong-man Ong.

| Illinois State University will become part of a national discussion on how students use communication technologies to express themselves, joining with media powerhouses like Microsoft, USA Today, and Toshiba on Wednesday, April 5, at 7:00 p.m. in Capen Auditorium. The event, part of the national Film Your Issue program, endorsed by major mass media figures including Walter Cronkite, Senator Barack Obama, Anderson Cooper, the Dalai Lama, and actor George Clooney, will feature a screening of finalists in the last round of student-produced issue films, including a documentary short produced by the Illinois State Student Television Workshop to promote the ISU Innocence Project. A discussion panel on Film and Social Consciousness in the Digital Age will include national representatives from Microsoft, USA Today, Toshiba, and Film Your Issue as well as experts from Illinois State University. After the screening of the short student films and the panel discussion, organizers will show the Academy-Award Nominated feature film Good Night and Good Luck, directed by George Clooney.

WZND, Illinois State’s student radio station, celebrated its 25th birthday with a bang last Wednesday, March 29. The Z106 Gorilla and Street team were on Illinois State’s quad handing out birthday cake and presents, and over the weekend, more than 100 WZND alums came back to campus to share in the celebration. On Friday night, WZND broadcasted a special alumni version of its popular ‘80s Rewind Show. The celebration culminated on Saturday evening with a dinner and dance.
