On April 20, Dean Olson presented the annual College of Arts and Sciences Spring Address in the Old Main Room. Steve Hunt, Chair of the College Council, served as master of ceremony for the event and provided a brief outline of Council initiatives for the year, followed by an introduction of the Dean. During his address, Dean Olson reported on the state of the College by announcing new budget developments and unveiling several new initiatives. “The state of the College is healthy and strong,” said Dean Olson. “The College is recovering nicely from the recent budget rescissions, and we are gaining our equilibrium.” To read the full text of the address and view the PowerPoint that accompanied the address,visit: http://www.cas.ilstu.edu/main/speech.shtm.

At the 2006 Spring Address last week, the Dean’s Awards for Outstanding Civil Service Member, Outstanding Administrative Professional, Outstanding Teaching, and Outstanding Scholarly Achievement were announced. In all, ten individuals from the College were honored across the four categories. “Today we honored ten, amazing individuals for their extraordinary achievements,” said Dean Olson. “The quality of nominees in each of these award categories was absolutely stellar. This embarrassment of riches is a clear indication of the superb quality of work being done by our faculty and staff.”

The Program in Energy Science and Education has been designated as the College’s 2006 Program of Excellence, Dean Olson announced at the Spring Address on Thursday, April 20. This program seeks to create an innovative, interdisciplinary M.S. in energy science and supports a research program in bioenergy and biomass fuel. The College received four extremely well-crafted proposals for the Program of Excellence. These include the new POE, Program in Energy Science and Education; Personal Relationships and Social Dynamics; Photodynamic Therapy Research; and Quantitative Risk Study Group. “We had four truly outstanding proposals this year,” said Dean Olson. “The Program in Energy Science and Education will substantially enhance the educational experience of Illinois State students and the research of several faculty members.”

Dr.Kathleen McKinney
Dr. Kathleen McKinney, Professor of Sociology and Cross Endowed Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, will be honored with the 2006 American Sociological Association (ASA) Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award in August. This prestigious award honors significant contributions made to the teaching of undergraduate and graduate sociology. “This award comes with a longstanding tradition of excellence in academia,” said Sally T. Hillsman, Executive Director of the American Sociological Association. “It is with great pleasure to include Dr. McKinney in the prestigious list of scholars who have truly made a difference in our field of sociology.”

ISU Forensics Team
The Illinois State University Forensics Team made ISU history at the American Forensic Association (AFA) National Individual Events Tournament held recently inFlorida—four individual national champions were named. These include: Patrick Carberry, in Program Oral Interpretation, Annie Kincade, in After Dinner Speaking, and Katelyn Wood and Kyle Schultz in Duo Interpretation. Overall, the team placed 4th against rival competitors Western Kentucky, University Texas-Austin, and Bradley University. Two weeks later, at the National Forensic Association (NFA) National Individual Events Tournament in Wisconsin the Illinois State Speech Team did it again.

Dr. Mark Siderits
Mark Siderits, Professor of Philosophy, has recently won a Numata Foundation Fellowship to work on a new translation of Indian philosopher Nagarjuna’s revolutionary work Mulamadhyamakakarikas (translated as Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way) with Professor Shoryu Katsura at Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan. The Numata Foundation is a research organization with its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan that coordinates and funds scholarly work on translations of important Buddhist texts. The Foundation regularly awards fellowships to accomplished scholars with exemplary research and teaching records. As a student of Buddhist and classical Indian Philosophy, a speaker of Sanskrit, Pali, German, and Japanese, and the author of Personal Identity and Buddhist Philosophy: Empty Persons in addition to countless articles on such topics as analytic philosophy and personal identity, Siderits brings his immense knowledge of non-Western philosophy and abilities as a scholar to the translation project.
