Dr. Kathleen McKinney, Professor of Sociology and Cross Endowed Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, will be honored with the 2006 American Sociological Association (ASA) Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award in August. This prestigious award honors significant contributions made to the teaching of undergraduate and graduate sociology. “This award comes with a longstanding tradition of excellence in academia,” said Sally T. Hillsman, Executive Director of the American Sociological Association. “It is with great pleasure to include Dr. McKinney in the prestigious list of scholars who have truly made a difference in our field of sociology.”

Among her teaching awards at Illinois State University are the College of Arts and Sciences Junior Distinguished Teacher Award, Senior Social Sciences Distinguished Award, and Outstanding University Teacher Award. She was also the recipient of the ASA Hans Mauksch Award for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education.

McKinney received her Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research has focused on relationships, sexuality, sexual harassment, higher education, and college teaching and has appeared in numerous scholarly publications including several co-authored and edited books. McKinney also served three years as editor of Teaching Sociology, the refereed, national journal of the ASA. Currently, she is a member of the ASA Department Resources Group, a group of about 50 sociologists who assist their colleagues around the nation conducting teaching workshops and programs reviews and writing teaching materials.
