New Program of Excellence Named
research
The Program in Energy Science and Education has been designated as the College’s 2006 Program of Excellence, Dean Olson announced at the Spring Address on Thursday, April 20. This program seeks to create an innovative, interdisciplinary M.S. in energy science and supports a research program in bioenergy and biomass fuel. The College received four extremely well-crafted proposals for the Program of Excellence. These include the new POE, Program in Energy Science and Education; Personal Relationships and Social Dynamics; Photodynamic Therapy Research; and Quantitative Risk Study Group. “We had four truly outstanding proposals this year,” said Dean Olson. “The Program in Energy Science and Education will substantially enhance the educational experience of Illinois State students and the research of several faculty members.”

The Program in Energy Science and Education weds a rigorous academic curriculum with a cutting-edge research agenda. Participating faculty are from the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Economics, Geography/Geology, and Physics as well as the Department of Agriculture and Technology in the College of Applied Science and Technology. While the program is a true collaboration of a research team and a vast array of faculty and chairs from a number of departments, Dean Olson recognized John Sedbrook of Biological Sciences as playing a significant leadership role.

The Program of Excellence initiative was established to promote a unique cutting-edge, interdisciplinary academic program that will help bring distinction to the College and the University. Through a partnership with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, this program will receive $50,000 during 2006-07.
