Dean Olson
On April 20, Dean Olson presented the annual College of Arts and Sciences Spring Address in the Old Main Room. Steve Hunt, Chair of the College Council, served as master of ceremony for the event and provided a brief outline of Council initiatives for the year, followed by an introduction of the Dean. During his address, Dean Olson reported on the state of the College by announcing new budget developments and unveiling several new initiatives. “The state of the College is healthy and strong,” said Dean Olson. “The College is recovering nicely from the recent budget rescissions, and we are gaining our equilibrium.” To read the full text of the address and view the PowerPoint that accompanied the address, visit: http://www.cas.ilstu.edu/main/speech.shtm.

Dean Olson announced that the new, innovative model of funding summer school “appears to be working quite well” and has experienced impressive success. After concentrated efforts to ensure that the College experiences the most “robust” summer in history, 3,388 students are currently enrolled in College of Arts and Sciences courses, and at least 180 courses will be offered, up from 2,592 students and 120 classes last year.

Following the Dean’s Address, the Dean’s Awards for Outstanding Civil Service Staff Member, Outstanding Administrative Professional, Outstanding Teaching, and Outstanding Scholarly Achievement were announced, as was a new Program of Excellence. See this issue for full articles on these awards.

CASNews will be reporting on major initiatives from the address in forthcoming issues.
