2007 Inductees
| Over 60 friends, family, and former colleagues gathered in the Old Main Room on Saturday morning to witness the induction of nine new members into the College of Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. There were smiles and tears as inductees were introduced by their former professors, colleagues, and even a sister. “This year’s inductees possess a wide range of degrees, professions, talents, and abilities,” observed Dean Olson. “However, the one thing that all of them share is an appreciation for the role that Illinois State University played in shaping their lives.”

Dr. Larry Long, Executive Director, School of Communication
| The School of Communication has been selected to receive the 2007 FOCUS Department/School Award. This award recognizes the School for its commitment to excellence in incorporating civic/community engagement into its curriculum and co-curricular activities. FOCUS (Faculty Opportunities for Creating Civic and Community Understanding Among Students) is a faculty development program designed to emphasize the value of civic and community engagement at Illinois State University. The School will receive $2,500 to enhance or sustain the school’s civic/community efforts. The Department of Physics received an Honorable Mention and will receive $1,000 in recognition of its activities.

Dr. James Payne (left) Dr. George Waters (right) | Dr. James Payne and Dr. George Waters, Department of Economics, won the Best Paper Award at the Academy of Economics and Finance’s 34th annual meeting held recently in Jacksonville, Florida. Waters and Payne were honored for their paper “The Prime Rate and Federal Funds Rate: Interest Rate Pass Through and Asymmetric Adjustment,” which is forthcoming in the refereed journal, Applied Economics. “Upon assuming the position of Chair, I was charged with mentoring junior faculty in their research endeavors,” said Professor Payne. “It is especially nice to have such research collaboration recognized by one’s peers.”

ISU Debaters Prepare for Competition
| Alex Berger and Robert Kosic of the Illinois State University Debate Team advanced to the quarter finals in the University of Kansas Invitational Debate Team Tournament held February 16-19. This victory marks the best Illinois State University performance at this invitational in recent history. In addition, Brenden Hayes and Patrick Milott achieved individual speaker awards by ranking in the top ten speakers. This year’s topic concerns overruling key Supreme Court precedents. “The debaters have been working very hard to improve their competitive success,” said Dr. Joe Zompetti, Director of Forensics. “One of the factors aiding in their victories is the strong camaraderie of the entire squad, despite the relative inexperience of many of the debaters.”

Dr. Christopher Breu | Dr. Christopher Breu, Department of English, received his Ph.D. in literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz and joined the ISU faculty in 2000. In 2006, he won the Dean’s Award for Scholarly Achievement, which recognizes faculty for their achievements in research. Breu’s research interests include 20th Century American Literature, Popular Culture, Cultural and Critical Theory, and Gender and Sexuality. His current project is a book that draws upon globalization and psychoanalytic theories to address the underside of global commodity culture as it is represented in the fiction of a range of postmodern writers. “Professor Breu is willing to color outside the lines, which is part of what makes both his teaching and research so strong,” said Dr. Tim Hunt, Chair of the Department of English. “He is committed to asking provocative questions and willing to consider provocative answers.”
