Joe Smaldino

Dr. Joseph Smaldino

After an extensive national search, the College has appointed Dr. Joseph Smaldino chair of the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. A Professor of Audiology at Northern Illinois University, Smaldino is well known for research into classroom acoustics that bridges disciplinary concerns of both audiologists and speech pathologists. He helped develop NIU’s Au.D. program and served as a consultant to ISU’s speech and audiology faculty in developing a similar program. Smaldino brings with him a rich body of knowledge not only of audiology, but of the pedagogical and administrative aspects of an Au.D. program. “I am pleased and honored to have been selected to join the speech-language pathology and audiology family at ISU,” said Smaldino. “The prospects look bright for an already very strong program to become top notch among programs in the region and nationally. I am excited about being part of the program’s future.”

Dr. Carol Morton Schmidt

Dr. Carol Morton Schmidt, Department of Biological Sciences, is this year’s recipient of the Herb Sanders Award for Outstanding Academic Advisement. “Dr. Schmidt has been an exceptional advisor over her long career at Illinois State, with her total dedication and commitment to the success and best interest of our undergraduates,” said Dr. Tak Cheung, Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences. “Her dedication to the Healthcare Preprofessional Program has contributed directly to our students in gaining admission to professional schools.” The award, named for Herb Sanders, who died in 1980 after 31 years in the School of Music and as an academic advisor, recognizes advisors who demonstrate a caring attitude for students, who are assistive in their contacts with students and who support campus-wide academic advisement. “Advising has been very rewarding for me,” said Schmidt. “I am so fortunate to be able to work closely with many, many wonderful students who share their hopes and dreams with me.” She will be honored at a reception on March 8 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in the Atrium of the Science Laboratory Building.
