Morning Edition™ Host Jim Browne | WGLT is one of only twelve stations in the country selected to participate in one of two pilot workshops in the new Morning Edition Grad School, the first national effort aimed at assuring peak performance for Morning Edition on local stations. Both workshops will be conducted in August with a full report to be presented at the 2006 Public Radio Program Directors Conference in Philadelphia next September.

Civil Service Advisory Committe | Six staff members were elected to the College’s new Civil Service Advisory Committee. The committee will serve as a link between staff and administration to address the concerns and viewpoints of the staff. The six members are Jim Dunham (Department of Physics), Sally Little (Department of Biology), Julie Ruby (Department of History), Judy Becker (Department of Psychology), Stacy Albright (Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures), and Irene Taylor (Department of English). In addition to the six members, there will also be an at-large representative, Peggy Haycraft. “I am grateful to the members of this committee for their willingness to serve,” said Dean Olson. “Their observations and advice will prove invaluable as we work together to maintain our College’s reputation of excellence.”

Dr. Joseph Zompetti
| Dr. Joseph Zompetti, from the School of Communication, was selected as one of the eighteen international trainers for the 12th annual International Debate Education Association (IDEA) Youth Forum held in Predeal, Romania from July 23 through August 5th. The Forum hosted 40 national teams representing 31 countries, including Argentina, South Korea, Mongolia, South Africa, and many European countries. The teams were involved in four preliminary debates, which were followed by elimination rounds and culminated in a final round held in the beautiful cultural city-center of Brasov, Romania. Dr. Zompetti was also a trainer in Macedonia (2005), Estonia (2004) and Slovakia (2002).

| Dr. Seow Ting Lee | Dr. Seow Ting Lee, Assistant Professor of Communication, is named a Page Legacy Scholar for the 2006-07 academic year by the Arthur W. Page Center for Integrity in Public Communication. Lee and co-author I-Huei Cheng from the University of Alabama received an $8,000 research grant to fund their proposal entitled “The Ethics of Public Health Communication: Message development in antismoking campaigns.” The Page Center awards grants annually to support scholars and professionals making important contributions to knowledge, practice, or public understanding of ethics and responsibility in public communication. Arthur W. Page, a longtime vice president for public relations at AT&T, is often regarded as the founder of the modern practice of corporate public relations. Lee’s research projects focus on media ethics, media effects, and public health communication.

| Thomas J. Turner |
Thomas J. Turner has won the prestigious John Culver Wooddy Scholarship Award for his work in the actuarial profession. This is the second year in a row that an ISU student has received this scholarship. Last year, Carol Sorenson was also a recipient. Only one other university in the world has had two students receive this scholarship in two consecutive years. "We are delighted that again this year an ISU student has been recognized as one of the best actuarial students in the world," said Provost John Presley, "We are proud of T.J. and his accomplishments, and we believe that the faculty of the Department of Mathematics have established what is clearly an excellent program."

| Dr. Benjamin Schmeiser | Benjamin Schmeiser is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. He has over 14 years of teaching experience, including teaching in a primary school in Spain, a high school in Iowa, and a community college in California. He has also taught at Indiana University and the University of Kentucky. Dr. Schmeiser’s research interests are phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics, and second language acquisition. He received his Ph.D. at the University of California at Davis and his undergraduate and master’s degrees at the University of Northern Iowa. “I am very honored,” said Dr. Schmeiser, “to be a part of the College of Arts and Sciences here at ISU. I look forward to working diligently to maintain the College’s excellent reputation and high standards.”
