Diane Zosky

Diane Zosky, Associate Professor in the School of Social Work, will serve as Interim Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology for the 2007-2008 academic year. Zosky, who holds a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Illinois State University, an MSW from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a PhD from Loyola University Chicago, has served as the Program Director/Coordinator for the School of Social Work’s Bachelor of Social Work degree program since 2001. “I look forward to working with the members of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the year ahead,” said Zosky. “They are committed to their teaching, their scholarship, and to making a difference to humanity.”

James Kalmbach 

Professor James Kalmbach, Department of English, received the Computers and Composition Charles Moran Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field at the 23rd annual Computers and Writing conference at Wayne State University on May 19, 2007. The award recognizes exemplary scholarship and professional service to the field of computers and writing.

 

Kalmbach, the Associate Chair of the English department, received the College of Arts and Sciences Service Award - Humanities Division in 2007, the Outstanding University Teacher award in 2005, and the Distinguished Chapter Service Award from the Illinois Heartland Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication in 2000. With Ron Fortune, he co-chaired the Computers and Writing Conference when it was hosted at Illinois State in 2002.

Norwegian Audiologists

Joseph Smaldino, Lars Gunnar, Arne Vik, and Walt Smoski

Two audiology professors from the Sor-Trondelag University College in Trondheim, Norway visited the ISU campus on June 12 to discuss future collaborations with the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The professors, Arne Vik and Lars Gunnar, met with incoming department chair Dr. Joseph Smaldino, Dr. Susan Prendergast and outgoing chair Dr. Walt Smoski in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The visiting Norwegians are members of a team of professionals investigating how best to set up a national system to improve classroom listening conditions in schools across Norway. Dr. Smaldino and Dr. Prendergast are known nationally for their work in developing, evaluating and standardizing amplified classrooms in the United States and will be collaborating with the team to aid in the development of this system. “We had a very informative meeting with our guests and are excited to be involved with this very important nation-wide project,” said Smoski, Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. “We look forward to collaborating with Arne and Lars and the rest of the team in the near future.”

  


Planetarium Inside

The Illinois State University Planetarium is offering the laser-light show, Summer Lights, on Wednesday and Friday evenings, June 15 through July 20. Summer Lights features space music combined with amazing light effects and the beauty of the stars. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. There will be no presentation of Summer Lights on Wednesday, July 4. “We have a wonderful show, and we hope all members of the community will take this opportunity to share the beauty of the stars with their families,” said Thomas Willmitch, Director of the Planetarium. “Combined with music written by local composer Dan Meyer especially for our show and some special effects, we think this will be an evening people of all ages will enjoy.”

Admission to Summer Lights is $3 for adults, $2 for children ages 5-12 and seniors, and $1.50 for children ages 3-4. Planetarium members are admitted free of charge.

For the second year in a row, Illinois State University’s Women's and Gender Studies Program will co-host the National Women’s Music Festival on Thursday, July 5, through Sunday, July 8, in the Bone Student Center.

A four-day musical and cultural extravaganza incorporating all facets of women’s lives, the National Women’s Music Festival features workshops, concerts, comedy, theatre presentations, dances, a marketplace, newly released films and videos, a live auction, fine arts exhibit, spirituality series, writers series, animal lovers series and a celebrity golf scramble.

The Festival, first produced in 1975 in Champaign, has various ticket packages, ranging from $25 for the youth-oriented SheRocks concert to $235 for a four-day pass to all events. The Festival will have a childcare program for children under 10-years of age, and a work-exchange of four-hour shifts is available for reduced-price registration. The work-exchange arrangements must be made prior to the Festival by e-mailing workexchange@wiaonline.org. Shuttle service is available from the Bloomington-Normal Regional Airport to the Festival.

Lisa Szczepura

Lisa Szczepura, Department of Chemistry, joined the ISU faculty in 1997 after receiving both her BS and PhD at the State University of New York at Buffalo and completing a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Szczepura is a professor of inorganic chemistry. Her current research involves studying the fundamental chemistry associated with octahedral hexanuclear clusters; these are compounds containing six transition metal centers arranged in a specific geometry (click Read More to see figure). "Fundamental studies are very important in the sciences because they allow us to understand the basic principles of nature," said Szczepura. "Our ultimate goal is to use the information we obtain on these systems to design clusters for specific industrial or commercial applications."
