Kathryn Bohn                        Willie Brown

Kathryn Bohn, ’74, MS ’80, was elected Chair of the CAS Community Advisory Board at its meeting in the Bone Student Center on June 5. Willie G. Brown, ’73, was elected Vice Chair. Bohn and Brown will serve two-year terms. Dean Olson thanked Judge Chuck Witte, retiring Chair, for his service. “Chuck Witte was instrumental in helping the college establish this board,” said Dean Olson. “We owe him a tremendous debt for his dedication to the college and to ISU.” Olson also thanked outgoing Vice Chair Carol Struck for her excellent service to the board.

Dr. Sol Shulman, much-loved and respected Professor Emeritus and former chair of the Department of Chemistry, was honored at a ceremony on May 9 during which the atrium in the Science Laboratory Building was officially named the Dr. Sol Shulman Atrium. A reception followed the ceremony. Shulman, a member of the College's Emeritus Faculty Advisory Board, came to Illinois State in 1969. His many accomplishments included illustrating the critical need for a new science building to former ISU President Thomas Wallace. Although he retired in 1992, Shulman was a daily presence during the science building's construction. He personally designed the facility's cabinets and fume hoods. The Science Laboratory Building opened for classes in 1997.

Japanese Diasporas


Nobuko Adachi recently published a Japanese translation of her book Japanese Diasporas: Unsung Pasts, Conflicting Presents, and Uncertain Futures (Shinsen-sha, Tokyo). The original English version, published in 2006 by Routledge, is a collection of scholarly articles dealing with Japanese immigrants around the globe. It presents new perspectives on socio-political and cultural issues of transnational migrants and immigrant communities in an economically intertwined world.

The star projector

The Illinois State University Planetarium will present a family program, 3, 2, 1, Blast Off!  from June 18 through July 25. The show features two youngsters, Devon and Alex, exploring the solar system aboard cyber-ship Sol 1. Together with their guide Pixel, the children visit each of the planets that circle the Sun. “If you’ve not visited the planetarium before, this summer is an ideal time,” said Tom Willmitch, the Director of the planetarium. “This is a great show for all ages.” Show times are 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and 7:30 p.m. on Fridays. There will be no presentation on July 4.

David Anderson

David Anderson is an associate professor of philosophy at Illinois State University. He earned his PhD in philosophy from Harvard University and received his MTS from Harvard Divinity School. He serves as chair of the steering committee of the Consortium on Cognitive Science Instruction and sponsor of the consortium's archive. Anderson conducts research in the areas of philosophy of language, metaphysics, philosophy of religion, theories of mind and consciousness.
