Gerhard L. Weinberg, the William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will deliver the 2007 Robert G. Bone Lecture on Thursday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 138 in Schroeder Hall. His talk, “World War II in Postwar Politics,” is free and open to the public. Weinberg is one of the world’s leading authorities on Adolf Hitler. Weinberg is also an expert on modern Germany, modern diplomatic history and World War II. “Gerhard Weinberg is America’s most distinguished historian of the Second World War,” said Roger Biles, Chair of the Department of History. “His many path-breaking books and articles have enriched our understanding of the military and diplomatic events that changed the world in the years 1939-45.”

The Delta Kings

WGLT Public Radio Station will co-host the first-ever Bar-B-Quad on Wednesday, October 10. This party and concert, co-sponsored by the ISU Alumni Association, will be held on the ISU Quad as part of the University's 150th anniversary homecoming events. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children under 10 and include a full barbeque dinner from Longhorn Smokehouse and live blues from from Barb Hamilton and the Delta Kings. NV Ultra Lounge will offer a cash beer/wine bar. Monday, October 8 is the last day to purchase advance tickets. TV-10 Silver Dome Winners
|
School of Communication students won fifteen Silver Dome Awards during the awards presentation ceremony at the Annual Illinois Broadcasters Assocation conference on September 28. Top honorees include TV-10, the campus television station, and WZND, the student-run campus radio station. TV-10 received eight awards, with first place awards in three of the six TV categories. Earl Reitan

Earl A. Reitan, Professor Emeritus of History, will present a free public lecture on his new book, Politics, Finance, and the People: Economical Reform in England in the Age of the American Revolution, 1770-1792 at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10 in the Community Room at the Normal Public Library. The book is a study of British public finance and administration at a time of political, military, and imperial crisis. “Professor Reitan is a dedicated scholar committed to life-long learning and teaching,” said Richard Dammers, Professor Emeritus of English. “He continues through his scholarship the masterful teaching he began over half a century ago.” Dammers added that Reitan brings to life the human issues behind the financial and political drama in the government of King George III.

Victorious Speechbirds

The ISU Speech Team scored two wins in Iowa this September, one at Wartburg College and another at the University of Northern Iowa. “The ISU Forensics Union, composed of speech and debate team members and coaches, is the strongest in the nation,” said Larry Long, Director of the School of Communication. “Our forensics activity is a university-wide effort with team members coming from over 20 departments and schools.” ISU has won three national titles in the last eight years and has placed no lower than fourth in the last 10 years. Long added that the campus and community can be proud of this record.
