College Announces Outstanding Service Awards

Stephen Hunt, Frank Beck, and R.K. Jayaswal

Three faculty members are winners of the 2008 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Service Awards for their extraordinary service accomplishments: Dr. Frank Beck, Department of Sociology and Anthropology; Dr. Steve Hunt, School of Communication; and Dr. R.K. Jayaswal, Department of Biological Sciences. Every year a committee selects one winner from each of the College’s three divisions: Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Winners are eligible to be nominated in future years for the Outstanding University Service Award. “All of this year’s winners have devoted much time and energy in service to the College and to ISU,” said Associate Dean Sally Parry. “We are very proud of and grateful to each of them.”

Beck is the Director of the Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development, an important unit on campus which connects ISU with the Peach Corps and other national and international NGOs by training students in community development. Beck has developed a clear mission for the unit, also working to obtain grants and contracts, including one recent grant for $500,000 from the USDA. He has served on 5 search committees, many departmental committees, and has chaired four and served on ten graduate committees. Beck has also advised the Sociology honors society and was a member of the CAS Strategic Plan Committee. Currently, he serves as a manuscript reviewer for several journals, and is associate editor for Southern Rural Sociology and Sociological Inquiry, a member of the Task Force for Rural Education, and a scoutmaster. He also helps the community through his placement of Stevenson Center students with local agencies.

Hunt plays an important role in both the School of Communication and the University at large. Until recently he was the co-director of the Communication as Critical Inquiry sequence in the General Education program, and is now Associate Director of the School. He has served on many thesis committees, mentored graduate students, guided research projects, and worked on program assessment. He has been invaluable as one of the team that made Critical Inquiry such an important part of the Inner Core of General Education. Hunt has chaired two departmental search committees, serves on the CGE, and is Co-Chair of the American Democracy Project. His service with the Political Engagement Project and work to bring civic and political engagement into the classroom led to his being named an American Association of State Colleges and Universities/Carnegie Foundation of the Advancement of Teaching Political Engagement Scholar. Hunt also serves on social justice committees, including Illinois Play for Peace and the Living Democracy Committee of Bloomington-Normal.

Jayaswal is a distinguished professor who has accomplished much in the service of his department, including developing and serving as the director of the MS in Biotechnology and the PhD sequence in Molecular and Cellular Biology. He has held many service assignments at the department, college, and university levels, and he is currently on the search committee for the dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology. Jayaswal is also a mentor to many students and colleagues, having served as a major professor for eight PhDstudents and 15 MS students, and on committees for 34 additional graduate students. As part of his service to the profession, Jayaswal has served as a reviewer for numerous journals and grant applications, and he has been on the Advisory Committee for the First International Symposium on Microbial-Exploitation and the Research Policy and Allocations Committee of the American Heart Association-Illinois.
